After a long drive from Florida, I decided to pass through Washington D.C. to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Afterwards, I decided to visit a good friend who I hadn’t seen in years and of course because I hadn’t driven in D.C. for quite some years, I got a bit lost. I found myself driving down Georgia Avenue on the Northwest side of D.C. where I quickly became familiar with the area when I saw the sign for Howard University.

Twenty five years ago, one of my favorite stomping grounds was Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Times have changed. I've grown up and moved on in life. But on a recent visit home for Thanksgiving, I had the occasion to have lunch with my friend Karen, who I hadn't seen in over 13 years. Since everything old is new again, we decided to dine in Old Town Alexandria. On that beautiful Sunday afternoon, standing under the art deco façade, we made our way inside of The Majestic on King Street.
Oaxacan cuisine is without a doubt known for its mole and is thus called the land of seven moles. The menu at Casa Oaxaca features 5 different kinds of moles: poblano, verde, rojo, amarillo, and negro. For those that have never before tasted mole, it is a thick, almost paste-like, sauce made from ground chiles and a mix of seasonings. While mole is typically served with chicken, Casa Oaxaca features it with steaks, shrimp, and even duck. For those on a tighter budget, the enchiladas de mole poblano at $15 (versus $17-21 for other items) is a nice way to savor the flavors. The enchiladas also afford some familiarity with the typical corn tortilla and cheese. The downside to the enchiladas, however, is that mole is a dense flavor and compliments meat dishes better than the starchy enchilada dish.
This cafe caught my attention when I was watching a television program doing a
feature on it. It's up to you the public to share with MCCN just how good they are but here are few words from their website which sums up the New Zealand experience offerings such as flat white a drink similar to a latte minus the bubbly foam thus it is called flat white.
