The Cambodian New Year generally occurs on April 13th – 15th. Dates for the holiday are sometimes adjusted to fall on a weekend. Also known as Chol Chnam Thmey (entering the New Year), the annual event is celebrated during a three day festival including purification ceremonies, temple offerings, traditional games, and a royal procession. The ceremony is intended to welcome the New Year Spirit Tevada Chhnam Thmey.

Revelers perform a spring cleaning of their houses and set up an altar loaded with food, drink, flowers, candles, and incense. A large feast concludes the first day of celebration. The following days of the festival are filled with monastery visits, gift exchanges, games, and prayer. Traditional foods associated with the Cambodian New Year celebration include noodles, peanut curries, and tree mushrooms. One popular New Year’s treat is the sticky, rice -covered cake Kralan.
