For the season premiere of the CW's HellCats , I viewed it with Margaret Scott-Adams, a Cheerleading Program Director for the Thomas Jefferson Campus in Brooklyn and East Orange Recreation Center in New Jersey.  Early in the episode Ashley Tisdale's character defends cheerleading as a sport, a strangely disputed issue even though one must get the same form filled out for medical clearance for any other sport in high school and college.

Ms. Adams was glad to see the show point out that simply watching Bring It On is not only way to prepare to become a cheerleader.  Here are some pointers from the expert:

  • Warm up for a half hour to an an hour.(run a few laps, stretch or run or down stairs) You need the breath for a 3 minute routine.  Stretch your legs to prevent injury. Try to doing weights for lifting because you have to lift another person.  Push- ups for upper body strength..
  • Basic Cheerleading includes motions(10 to 15 arm motions and hand position).
  • Learn basic jumps, standing preps for jumps, cartwheels, and tumbling.
  • Learn basic cheers and dances.
  • Have a knowledge of Pyramid Building/stunting.

Hellcat stars many familiar faces including  Alyson MichalkaAshley TisdaleRobbie Jones, and Sharon Leal.
