In the San Fernando Valley of California, there is a program called the Royal Manner Academy of etiquette and protocol. The program offers youth the experience of learning how to fill out an application properly, brainstorming what to put on a business card, interviewing skills, lessons on international formalities, the art of tying a tie, dressing for successs, table etiquette and a graduation.

It may comes across as a novel idea in the United States where casual clothes are becoming the norm in many work environments. Nevertheless, attention to the details and knowing what to wear even if it is a casual day matters. It may not be right but every day people are judged about their kinky hair, slanted eyes, accent, low cut blouse, potty mouth, body odor, wrinkled clothes, material of clothing or hairstyle. Knowing etiquette and manners does not mean to cease freedom of expression instead it simply arms one with the right tools to navigate more successfully in the world. Ignorance may seem like bliss but it can be harmful.
Who needs table manners when you eat pizza, hamburgers and off a paper plate? Think ahead for you and your children. Where you may be is not where you may always be. Just because you navigated through life without it does not mean that your child should. Equip yourself and your children with the right tools for better opportunities for success. Buy a book, take a class, or navigate in circles where people are employing these skills and take mental notes. It may seem pretentious but manners still matter.- Crystal J- MCCN Editor
