Selena Day is a local holiday celebrated in Texas on April 16^th. The day celebrates the life and legacy of Mexican American singer-songwriter Selena Quintanilla-Perez.

May 14^th is National Buttermilk Biscuit day. The piping hot piece of bread served with your meal has come a long way. Similar to the scone, the biscuit maintains a hard and bitter tasting past.

Wikipedia explain the sweet 16 as a celebration in the United States and Canada as a coming age usually for a girl.  Several other cultures have big coming age celebrations at 15 or 18.

Toonik Tyme is a weeklong celebration in Iqaluit, Canada. Occurring the third weekend in April, the aboriginal holiday consists of games, music, competitions and feasting. Since 1965, the annual festival has served as a way for community members to collectively welcome spring and attract tourism.

One of the great joys of being a kid in my time was cracker jacks.  They taste great and the prizes, lots of fun.  Just singing the song, you knew as a kid that there was a mystical old time feel.

The History

Frederick William Rueckheim and his brother Louis mass-produced Cracker Jack and sold it at the first Chicago World's Fair in 1893. At the time, it was a mixture of popcorn, molasses, and peanuts and was called "Candied Popcorn and Peanuts".

One account holds that Reuben Kulakofsky (sometimes spelled Reubin, or the last name shortened to Kay), a Lithuanian-born grocer from Omaha, Nebraska, was the inventor, perhaps as part of a group effort by members of Kulakofsky's weekly poker game held in the Blackstone Hotel from around 1920 through 1935. The participants, who nicknamed themselves "the committee", included the hotel's owner, Charles Schimmel. The sandwich first gained local fame when Schimmel put it on the Blackstone's lunch menu, and its fame spread when a former employee of the hotel won a national contest with the recipe.

The origins of Black History month can be traced to Carter G. Woodson’s Negro History Week. An avid historian, Woodson wanted to champion the many, but largely ignored accomplishments of African Americans. In 1915, he helped found The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History or ASALH).

Buffalo Wings are a Superbowl Party staple. The tiny chicken treats have an interesting history dating back to 1964. Teressa Bellissimo, owner of the Anchor Bar of Buffalo, NY, is traditionally associated with the creation of Buffalo Wings.

European immigrants migrated west, they found the nation's heartland, which reminded many of their homelands. Climatic conditions suited farming well, and initially, farmers grew wheat, hops, and other grains. Dairy farming followed naturally, and dairy farmers soon produced an abundance of top-quality milk. To preserve excess milk, farmers made cheese. The move from producing cheese for family use to making cheese to sell was a short step. However, commercial production of cheese in Wisconsin began on a small scale.

Atole (Mexican Spanish, from Nahuatl atolli) is a traditional masa-based Mexican and Central American (where it is known as atol) hot drink. Chocolate atole is known as champurrado. It is typically accompanied with tamales, and very popular during the Christmas holiday season (Las Posadas).
