C-CAP & CHAYA Tuna Tartare Winner

student-prepare-tartare2Executive Chef Shigefumi Tachibe, the inventor of tuna tartare way back in 1984, partnered his Chaya Restaurants with Careers through Culinary Arts Program C-CAP Los Angeles to host a “Top Tuna Tuna Tartare Chef” competition for 15 students from 3 LAUSD high schools. 

Many of the students opted for Mexican fusion takes on the tuna tartare.

The event took place on January 13, 2010 at Chaya Downtown and the winner’s creation runs as a featured  item on the restaurant’s menu for the remainder of the month of January. Additionally, the winner's name will be on the menu item. Two out of the three winners including the top honor went to Hollywood High School culinary students.  It was announced at the event that Spagos intends to embark on a similar partnership. Winner of the competition, Elisa Mendoza is featured below.
