Canada: Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day in Canada takes place annually on the second Monday of October. The national public holiday serves as an opportunity for Canadians to be thankful for the good fortune of the preceding year.

Many Canadians have the day off from work and use the three day weekend to visit family and friends, take last minute autumn vacations, or just relax. Origins of the day can be traced to the indigenous people of the Americas, by way of Civil War refugees.

Refugees brought the holiday to Canada and in its early incarnations celebrated annually changing themes and celebration dates. The holiday became regulated to the second Monday of October in 1957.

Just like its American counterpart, the Canadian Thanksgiving uses the cornucopia as a bountiful symbol and incorporates a huge meal. Traditional meal servings include roast turkey, pecan nuts, corn, and pumpkin.

I'm not used to seeing a thanksgiving celebration on a different date. But if it's anything like in the US, then I'm sure it's a lot of fun.

Many persons fail to recognize just how crucial these Cultural Center are in the lives of individuals. Nothing like the exploration into one's heritage and if it takes an Cultural center to do so, terrific!

Learn something new every day, didn't know there was Thanksgiving holiday in Canada. October seems like a nice month to celebrate it too, November gets kinda cold where we live.

It feels a bit weird celebrating thanksgiving day on October. I'm just used to thinking that thanksgiving day is celebrated on the November.
