Here at the Multi Cultural Cooking Network, it's all about food and culture, and you can't get more American than a diner. Yes, there are diners, far and wide across the United States, but there are probably not many that sport a 1950's yellow Mercury on its roof. Alas, Mechanicsville, Maryland is home to Bert's 50's Diner, a little pocket of retro-dining, where Elvis is still "The King", old cars are as American as apple pie, and the jukebox reigns supreme. Celebrating 25 years on June 25, 2010, Bert's has become more than just a retro-themed diner with good food. It has been given the status of a landmark in the historic St. Mary's county.

Owner Michael Katsikis says, "Everybody in Mechanicsville has had a family member that has worked for Bert's." Besides that, the diner is very charitable and active in the community; that's why it's no surprise as Bert's celebrates its 25th Anniversary, it is indeed a family affair. The celebration will include an Elvis impersonator, old car show, as well as fire engines from the fire department, free ice cream for everyone and, of course, the opportunity to try some of the best of Bert's offering inside the diner.

Bert's offers classic comfort food including "Bert's Famous fish" a haddock that is battered and either fried or broiled, plus their famous "Party Pizza," which is  30-inches long and has 30 slices. Katsikis insists that you will need to tip the pizza  box in order to take it out of the door. Then, of course, you have your hamburgers, fries, steaks, desserts and blue-plate specials like any other classic diner.

25 years in the restaurant business is nothing to sneeze at, but Katsikis, who has owned Bert's for 10 of the 25 years, explains he's not surprised by the success of the restaurant because of the theme. "The 50's was a good time," the owner recalls. "It's nostalgia! Everybody likes the 50's and they reminisce back. The music, the old cars... they associate with that." Katsikis made the executive decision not to mess up a good thing, saying: "The restaurant is the way it was since day one, with the exception that it has expanded. It's has become bigger, but the decoration is the same." The decoration includes the images of all the personalities of 50's represented on the walls, classic license plates from all 50 states, and of course the music of the artist of the 50's playing from the good ol' jukebox.

Bert's 50's Diner is a symbol of timelessness represented in a time-warp, where no matter what the year, the 1950's keep rocking and rolling on.
