The government is releasing new nutrition standards for school meals. This is going to be a dramatic change. The changes are designed to improve the health of nearly 32 million children who eat lunch at school every day. First lady Michelle Obama is making sure that we establish a healthier food program at school for fall this year. One of the top issues is making sure that each student has at least one cup of vegetables and fruits. Overall, kids consume about 30% to 50% of their calories while at school and establish maximum calories and sodium limits for meal. This requires that foods that are served contain no Trans fat and limits for calories.

Olive oil is commonly imported from Greece, Spain and Italy. Recently, I had a conversation with a culturally diverse group of friends about roasting asparagus with olive oil, not realizing all the twists and turns our conversation would have. My dear friend Ann, a proud Italian American who knows everything about what Dr. Oz(See Q&A) has to say about things, warned about roasting food with olive oil. Thus, I had to research this more after all I am only the editor of a cooking website. I stumbled upon a blog which seem to share the same info that was shared with me. Read Below.

Being on a budget doesn't mean you need to sacrifice taste or nutrition in your kid's school lunch. The key is to limit saturated fat and sugar. Cookies and French fries are not every day foods but treats that should be eaten sparingly. Instead, you want to incorporate some protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates in every meal. Adding fiber as well will keep kids feeling full and give them the energy they need to focus throughout the school day.

Americans are fat and getting fatter by the year. Recent data reported in medical journal Lancet showed that BMI (Body Mass Index), a recognized measurement of obesity, is higher on average in America than in any other nation.

The obesity problem, however, is international. The report in Lancet states that "In 2008, 9.8 percent of the world's male population were obese, as were 13.8 percent of women. In 1980, these rates were 4.8 percent and 7.9 percent." U.S. eating habits and diets have been exported, many experts say. Nations which before had relatively lean diets which were high in grains and fruits now consume many more soft drinks and hamburgers.
