(Cast of Different Strokes)
Nothing said multiculturalism more in the 1970’s than the hit series Different Strokes . The show put orphaned Black boys in the home of a rich White single male parent and his daughter Kimberly. America fell in love with Todd Bridges and the chubby-cheeked Gary Coleman. Coleman coined the phrase “What you talkin' bout Willis?” Back then this kind of interracial adoption was unheard of; today we see it modeled by Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock, and Madonna.
In the end , several generations will look back to what the show Different Strokes offered America — love that looked past color and embraced comedy, family and the unforgettable Gary Coleman.
