Marshmallow Doughnut, German Smear cake and mini football cakePhoto by Multi Cultural Cooking Network
While recently visiting a friend in Parkville, MD a suburb of Baltimore I took a stroll down Harford Rd. There are many old establishments including Fenwick's bakery, around since 1913. The Harford Rd business is a relocation from the humble origins of business at Columbia Ave, now Washington Blvd. Expect your sweet treats to be baked by Chef Al, baking at Fenwick's since 1979. Longtime customer of 15 years, Taylor says the French Apple pie, sweet potato pie, jelly and cream dougnuts are his favorites. Among the more popular pies is the peach pie. The right time of year to grab one is September. Fall of course is pumpkin season.
Among the more popular choices is the Baltimore marshmallow doughnut, German smear cake and the bakery is famous for the tradition of good ole' fashion cake doughnuts. Great for Local Raven's fans are the mini chocolate and purple frosted football cake with yellow cake. The frosting is sweet. The cake is light yet ironically to hold the cake there is a bit of weight.
Shopping for a wedding cake. The Cakes at Fenwicks have been featured on the Wedding Channel.
Germans are known for their beer and pretzels, but now I guess they are also good pastry makers. They are certainly very good bakers and what changed this is when I grabbed a pastry in one of the German bakeshops.

I would love to read the history of the Fenwick Bakery from its beginning. I used to go there several times each week with my grandmother in the '50s on Fenwick Avenue--then continued going to Harford Road.
I want to treat my church seniors to a nostalgic visit through words and baked goods early in December 2011.
Hope to hear from you!!
